Mordaunt Short, DSB 208 range 70s

Carnival, Festival and Pageant plus Signifer

The cleverly named Carnival, Festival and Pageant formed the bulk of Mordaunt Short's range in the mid to late seventies. Built in Hampshire England these were excellent small to mid sized speakers. All featured a 8in specially treated pulp cone bass designated DSB 208. The smallest speaker featured a cone tweeter. The Festival and Pageant a dome tweeter. The Pageant had a ported enclosure and some extra controls for matching the frequency response to surroundings. I owned a new pair of Festivals back in 1980. I should never have parted with them! They were simply superb.

(Festivals return July 2006, see below)

The DSB 208 is a versatile high performance unit designed for the accurate reproduction of programme material at realistic SPLs.

By combining a long throw voice coil, linear suspension, critically damped cone and compliant roll surround the DSB 208 achieves sound reproduction of exceptional low distortion even at high amplitudes.

The outstanding transient response of the DSB 208 shows to greatest advantage when the unit is used with advanced amplifiers of high power, nevertheless the acoustic efficiency of the unit is such as to enable it to enhance the output of quality amplifiers even at low power ratingsa

The DSB 208 has a very long throw, deep cone and very smooth motion

The Festival Series Two

This was the speaker system that I used during my student days. I bought a pair in 1981 at Laskys in Nottingham. They are bookshelf speakers that simply soak up power with great ease. I used them with a smart Rotel RA1000 integrated amp (40W per channel) and later the famous A+R Cambridge A60

In my view these speakers were far ahead of the opposition during the early eighties.

As students we were amazed with how far that bass cone could pop forward.

Other cool speakers to own at this time included Celestion Ditton 15XR and the RAM 150

FESTIVALS RETURN Added July 2006

Very rare in Australia. I bought this near mint pair of Festivals for 26 pounds (eBay UK in May 2005).The move from the UK though is horribly expensive. They finally arrived this month after a delay and surface mail. These are truly magnificent mid sized two way speakers. The right speaker below. The grilles are also as new. THESE ARE ABOUT 25 years old

that classic DSB 208 bass. One of the best 200mm drivers ever built

Mordaunt Short Signifer.

Top of the range MS speaker in the late seventies and I am assuming fairly scarce. Based on my experience with the DSB range the Signifer will be a real monster. They were very expensive back in 1980
